00954: Civil Engineer

We seek a Civil Engineer who will support engineering, operations, and field activities on a variety of water and wastewater projects in the greater Washington, DC metro area.  The successful candidate will mainly support various water and wastewater engineering projects but will also provide field investigation and condition assessment support of existing infrastructure. This position will be a mix of office engineering work completing engineering calculations and field work performing investigations and inspections. Over time we anticipate the successful applicant to progress into a project engineer then to a project manager position.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Water and Wastewater Engineering

  • Provide engineering support for various water and wastewater projects
  • Develop technical reports, studies, and memoranda
  • Support engineering designs, including development of contract drawings and specifications
  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic calculations
  • Create GIS figures and maps
  • Integrate collection system inspection reports into GIS databases

Field Investigation and Condition Assessment Support

  • Condition assessment of buried utility infrastructure
  • Oversight and quality management of pipeline condition assessment contractors
  • Review contractor submittals
  • Troubleshoot connectivity discrepancies of buried infrastructure
  • Preparation of field reports and other project correspondence

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering

Experience: Minimum of 2-4 years relevant experience in water and wastewater industry.  Knowledge of the water/wastewater design and condition assessment techniques for sewer collection systems and facilities is a plus.

Certifications/Licenses: Engineer-in-Training (EIT) designation is required.  NASSCO certification(s) are preferred but not required

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES

  • Technical background in the water and/or wastewater field including treatment or collection/distribution systems
  • Familiarity with asset management concepts, including asset inventory, condition assessment, risk-based project prioritization, and capital improvement planning
  • Proficiency using CAD and GIS database software
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills for interaction with clients, contractors and the public
  • Strong technical writing skills

Travel Demands: Local travel within the Greater DC Metro area (MD, DC, and Northern Virginia).  Candidate will be assigned to the Northern Virginia office for daily work.  Approximately 25% - 40% of the candidate’s time will be spent in the field assigned to condition assessment and construction projects within Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia during regular working hours.  A valid driver’s license will be required.
